Too often you will hear remodeling horror stories about an incompetent or swindling contractor. However, your remodeling tale doesn’t have to be this way. There are plenty of professional and trustworthy contractors available for hire - you just have to know how to look for them. Make sure you are hiring the right person for the job before investing home improvement loans into a project.
Here are three tips for hiring a remodeling contractor:
1. Check out the NARI website. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) lists remodelers certified by the organization. The NARI promotes professional conduct, training and ethical business practices.
2. Check credentials. Try to set up separate meetings with potential contractors after narrowing down the selection to three. Create a list of questions pertaining to their experience, past jobs and how they like to interact with homeowners on the job. In addition, make sure to ask for proof of each mentioned credential and be prepared to write down identification numbers on the license’s status.
3. Ask for references. Ask the contractor for a list of his or her past clients. Then, try contacting a few different people and ask them about their experience.
