While traveling around the holidays is common, few dates are as packed as the Independence Day weekend. In the weeks leading up to the break, many people may have considered affordable auto financing and buying a new vehicle in preparation.
In fact, AAA reported that the Fourth of July will be one of the busiest driving holidays this year, with roughly 41 million people expected to travel. This is a 1.9 percent increase compared to last year's numbers and up 14 percent compared to the Memorial Day weekend. Out of those totals, 34.8 million people are expected to get behind the wheel this holiday.
"With school out for summer, the Fourth of July holiday is typically the busiest summer travel holiday, with five million more Americans traveling compared to Memorial Day weekend," said Brad Roeber, AAA Illinois/Indiana regional president. "In line with tradition, most travelers are celebrating the Independence Day holiday with an all-American road trip."
Before hitting the road, however, Americans should make sure they are ready. The Red Cross recommended a few key emergency supplies that should be in the car at all times. These include snacks, first aid, flashlights and emergency contact cards, among others. Most importantly, drivers should take note of the weather and plan accordingly.
