When it comes time to make the tough choice about how to spend that auto financing, consumers are faced with a wide range of affordable options, from alternative fuel to do-it-all pickup trucks.
According to Consumer Reports, Chrysler and Tesla led the way with high accolades for overall quality. The Ram 1500 and the Model S each earned a spot on the organization's Top Picks list, alongside the Subaru Forester and the Hyundai Santa Fe.
"The competition in the marketplace has grown fierce," said Rik Paul, Consumer Reports' automotive editor. "There was a time when a handful of brands dominated our Top Picks list, but in recent years we've seen a more diverse group make the cut."
The Tesla Model S took home the best overall spot on Consumer Reports' list, highlighting the growing trend of manufacturers focusing on alternative fuel vehicles.
On a similar note, Kelley Blue Book compiled a list of many affordable hybrid options, all for under $30,000. The best choice was deemed to be the 2014 Toyota Prius, followed closely by the new hybrid versions of the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. These vehicles were chosen due to high fuel economy, practicality and a strong resale value.
