Recent testing performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has incorporated new stringent criteria, as it now takes more to earn the organization's highest honor.
For those interested in auto financing, that is a good thing. Safer vehicles are better for consumers, and the new IIHS standards include traditional requirements, like side and roof strength, as well as the new small overlap front test.
"We've made it more difficult for manufacturers this year," said IIHS president Adrian Lund. "Following a gradual phase-in, the small overlap crash is now part of our basic battery of tests, and good or acceptable performance should be part of every vehicle's safety credentials. We also felt it was time to offer extra recognition to manufacturers that are offering a proven crash avoidance technology."
New winners this include the Acura MDX and RLX, the Infiniti Q50, the Mazda 3 and the Toyota Highlander.
In addition, several manufactures are now offering good deals for those with auto financing. According to Consumer Reports, the 2013 Toyota Avalon was redesigned for the year, making it an affordable option. The 2013 Ram 1500, one of the most popular pickup trucks, is a favorite among drivers everywhere.
