Architecture firms report better sales, led by remodeling

Homebuyers and current owners are a picky demographic. These people know what they want at any given moment, but these preferences often change over the course of the year. It could range from a desire for affordable home improvement financing to location and amenities, and anywhere in between,

According to the American Institute of Architects, demand has shifted to access to public transportation, high-density development and mixed-use projects. Overall, architecture firms noted that business was improving, and remodeling activity has led the charge.

"With a revival in interest in urban living, there has been a marked transition in what people are looking for in their communities," said Kermit Baker, chief economist for the AIA. "Providing easy access to retail, entertainment, transportation, employment, and other elements associated with urban living environments will be a key factor as to whether communities can maintain their relevance and appeal."

However, homebuyers don't like everything. Those with home improvement financing looking to upgrade may want to focus on a few key areas. For example, explained that outdated appliances are a major turn off. The same applies to ceiling fans and light fixtures. 

Changing elements like this can appeal to current buyer preferences, and it could also lead to a higher final sale price.
