A home improvement project can be a grand undertaking - one that holds a risk of not seeing your investment pay off if poorly planned or executed. This is why it is absolutely critical that you hire the right contractor for the job. But how do you know that the contractor you're interviewing is on the level?
First, its important to get a clear sense of the contractor's history with successful projects. True, online review sites such as Angie's List, Yelp and others can give you some sense of whether or not customers are on the whole happy, but to get a full picture, it's best to ask friends and family for referrals.
Next, when fielding bids from contractors on a project, carefully review all potential contracts in writing. Ideally, a contract should be a detailed breakdown of the scope of the work, materials used, names of parties involved and a price estimate.
Finally, pay attention to what certifications your contractor has. Depending on the scope of the project, you may need to find a contractor with multiple certifications like plumbing, electrical and more.
