Major home department store Lowe's is offering a unique new feature in hopes of attracting customers and fostering excitement over home improvement projects: virtual reality walkthroughs of various projects.
Starting with a single store in Framingham, Massachusetts, Lowe's offers customers the opportunity to strap on a VR headset and enter an immersive tutorial, teaching them how to retile a bathroom. The company hopes to expand the program by offering a variety of tutorials in all its stores.
This isn't just a gimmick to attract customers: In test runs, the company found that customers who used the VR headset had 36 percent better recall of what they learned compared to just watching a tutorial online. Lowe's hopes this will help build up people's home improvement skillsets.
"People don't know how to do DIY projects anymore," Lowe's Innovation Labs executive director Kyle Nel told Fortune. "The skill set of being able to modify homes and do basic maintenance just isn't being passed down from generation to generation as it did in the past."
