One of the more critical components of a major home improvement project, from a financial standpoint, is the selection of a contractor. If you are not diligent in your hunt for a contractor, you could end up paying far more for much less desirable work, thus hindering your returns on investment before the first nail is even hammered.
The Press-Enterprise recently published some recommendations from long-time contractor Douglas Finch, who believes that homeowners need to take a methodical approach to contractor selection and management. He explained that homeowners must always review the license and insurance information of every prospective contractor and never shy away from asking the company or independent professional for verified referrals from previous clientele. Finch stated that homeowners need not search further when the first bid from a contractor is preferable, but that any sign that it might not be the best fit should be considered, and other individuals must look for other options.
With the right combination of diligence during the planning stages of a home improvement project, as well as proper selection of contractors and potential financing programs to get things rolling, homeowners can often boost the value of their houses.
