Traffic deaths are unfortunately on the rise, according to the National Safety Council. For drivers, the goal is always to be safe on the road, but many people overlook basic security measures. This is important year-round, but especially so during the summer months, when many families prepare for their warm-weather road trips.
When it comes to improving on-the-road safety, Home Loan Investment Bank's Christine Dikdan shared some effective tips. For starters, she stressed that safety begins with you - inspect your vehicle before getting in, stay focused behind the wheel and drive responsibly.
Say you're in the market for a new vehicle and affordable auto financing. How can you prioritize safety? To answer that question, Dikdan emphasized a little wisdom from her father: Bigger is better.
"Bigger is better," she noted. "You'll have more materials and metal protecting the driver and passengers in the event of an accident."
Dikdan also highlighted the value in driver and side-impact airbags.
"Please make sure you check the recommendations for weight and height recommendations to ride shotgun," she added. "It is always safer to have children - or anyone for that matter - ride in the back."
While it may seem that some vehicles are better from a safety perspective, the real difference involves the driver.
"Safety really has a lot more to do with the upkeep of the vehicle and the driver," Dikdan pointed out. "Vehicles that pass inspection - meaning all working mechanics are in proper order - are a safer bet. Just as important are alignment and tires. Bald tires, combined with an ill-aligned vehicle, can really cause havoc at higher speeds, if you have to maneuver quickly to avoid a situation."
With that in mind, remember that safety starts with you. While buying the right vehicle is important, regular maintenance and responsible driving are just as beneficial.
