Biking has always been a popular activity, but over the years, it has gained significant prominence as a viable means for commuting to work. Naturally, this is certainly the case in big cities, where a high cost of living, coupled with traffic and minimal parking, makes biking a smart option for so many.
However, not every big city is right for biking to work. To find out which ones were best, Walk Score, a Redfin company, compiled a list of the metropolitan regions with the best "Bike Score."
A score would increase for cities with dedicated bike lanes, bike paths and more dedicated resources for safe biking. The best city on the list was Minneapolis, followed closely by San Francisco, Portland, Oregon and Denver. Boston ranked fifth.
"Biking is central to the healthy Minneapolis lifestyle and to a lot of people's decisions about where to live in and around the city," explained James Garry, a Minneapolis-based Redfin agent.
If you want to snatch up a quality home near your favorite biking hotspot, you may have to move fast, however. A separate Redfin report found that homes in and around bike-friendly cities are selling at a record speed, given strong demand.
That, coupled with affordable residential financing, is making now a great time to jump into the housing market.
