Owning a pet - especially a dog - is no easy task. For dog lovers across the country, the reality quickly sets in that great apartments are rarely pet-friendly, and the best option is to often go in search of affordable residential financing and a new home.
In fact, Redfin took a look at just how expensive it was to rent and own a dog in a number of major cities across the country. The priciest markets were San Francisco; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Aurora, Colorado. This took into account housing, health care and pet care costs.
On the other hand, it was cheapest to live in Phoenix, Arizona; The Woodlands, Texas; and Nashville, Tennessee. One important takeaway from the Redfin report was the rarity of pet-friendly rentals.
"In the 116 cities that we looked at, only 16.5 percent of rentals allow dogs, and dog-friendly rentals cost 6 percent more on average," explained Nela Richardson, chief economist at Redfin.
This is why many pet lovers are skipping rentals and going straight to homeownership. Of course, it is always important to remember the costs associated with a dog, such as food, grooming, treats, toys and medication.
These can all add up, and it is important to budget in advance - whether planning for a new home or a new pet.
