On-the-road safety is paramount, from the moment you begin your search for affordable auto financing and a new vehicle to your first drive behind the wheel.
Of course, the same goes for your teen drivers. Teens are the highest-risk driving demographic on the roads, and they need a comprehensive and detailed education on the rules of the road and safe driving behaviors. With that said, though, most teens follow the lead of their parents.
According to the National Safety Council, 91 percent of parents use their cell phones while driving - with their teens in the car. This comes as 88 percent refer to themselves as their children's primary teachers. This means that parents are tasked with educating their children on safe driving, yet engage in one of the most common unsafe practices out there.
"When it comes to teaching our teens to drive, 'Do as I say, not as I do,' can be fatal," explained Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "Parents who make calls or send texts behind the wheel are sending a clear and dangerous message to their children: that distracted driving is acceptable."
If you're teaching your teen, make sure they:
- Stay off their phones
- Follow the laws
- Don't speed
- Remain alert
This will help them become better drivers in the future.
