The winter can be frustrating for a number of reasons, but one thing it is good for is vehicle sales. According to Edmunds.com, the rough weather has spurred many consumers to look into new trucks and SUVs over the past several months.
In January, the forecast for sales of new cars and trucks is at more than 1.1 million units. While this is down roughly 23 percent compared to December 2014, it is up 14.4 percent compared to January 2014.
"New car shoppers, seemingly inspired by winter weather and low gas prices, are buying up trucks and SUVs - particularly smaller ones," explained Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst for Edmunds.com. "At this point, most automakers and dealers offer products in these popular segments and are able to benefit from the trend."
It appears that many consumers interested in affordable auto financing and a new vehicle also had their eyes on the Super Bowl recently. A separate report from Edmunds.com found that a number of auto commercials aired during the big game were effective. Searches for Mercedes-Benz and BMW soared following their respective advertisements.
